Movement-Based Learning: A Game Changer for Kindergarten

In a new study in the British Journal of Educational Technology researchers explored the effectiveness of using a movement-based learning platform as a foundational tool in kindergarten education. Movement-based learning platforms are designed to integrate physical activity directly into early childhood education, aiming to enhance engagement, retention, and cognitive development through structured movement activities, not as an add-on but as a core component of the curriculum.

This study included three kindergarten teachers and 49 students over a full school year and focused on a systematic learning design process, ensuring that movement activities were aligned with academic content and developmental goals. The researchers observed student engagement, participation, and on-task behavior, while also collecting data on academic performance and retention. In addition, teachers kept a teaching journal throughout the study to evaluate overall classroom academic performance and engagement and record personal notes and comments after each session.

They found that integrating movement-based games in learning stations, including both digital and non-digital activities, increased student motivation, enjoyment, and participation in lessons. The students were able to achieve the learning objectives, as evidenced by their mastery of the skills practiced on the learning platform and their performance on the summative math test at the end of the school year. Movement-based learning was associated with improved memory retention and recall, as well as enhanced problem-solving and creativity. The students post-test scores revealed higher proficiency in critical math skills compared to their pre-test scores. The teachers reported that incorporating structured movement positively influenced student engagement and overall classroom dynamics. They found that movement games were useful and effective for their students and believed that the time and effort invested in implementing the games was worthwhile. Play-based movement sessions were particularly effective in reducing off-task behavior and fostering a dynamic learning environment. The researchers concluded that integrating movement-based platforms into core curriculum can support both physical and cognitive development in young learners.

StepUp Note

In this research, a movement-based learning activity using a virtual reality headset was included in a set of 4 daily learning activities.  Other activities included a tablet-based individual learning activity, a collaborative group learning activity for creating a picture, and an individual paper-and-pencil learning activity.  Researchers mentioned that the children enjoyed being able to move around as one part of their daily learning, and that movement overall increased engagement.  With StepUp to Learn, we see that the children not only enjoy moving and learning, but also they develop their ability to learn from each other as they move with shared rhythm.
