Why Handwriting and Spelling Matter for Quality Writing in Early Grades

Handwriting automaticity and spelling proficiency are key to improving young students’ writing outcomes, boosting their ability to generate text and improve writing quality. Handwriting fluency also develops over time, and focused instruction can enhance both legibility and fluency, leading to better writing. Studies have found that effective spelling instruction significantly enhances spelling and writing quality. When handwriting and spelling are developed together, students see improvements in the overall quality of their writing, including structure and coherence. If students cannot write letters quickly and accurately, it limits their written expression. Strong spelling skills, along with an understanding of sound-letter relationships, help students read and write with more confidence.

In a new study from the University of Calgary, published in Language and Literacy, researchers looked at how handwriting and spelling skills affect writing quality for Grade 2 students with different learning profiles. Writing samples from 298 students were scored for overall quality and handwriting quality. The researchers measured spelling accuracy and noted common spelling mistakes. Their findings showed strong connections between fluency of handwriting, spelling and quality writing outcomes. They found that better handwriting and spelling were strongly linked to higher quality writing for all young learners. They emphasize the need for clear teaching of handwriting and spelling, especially for English language learners, along with vocabulary instruction.

StepUp Note

This research shows that fluent handwriting significantly contributes to a child’s ability to create paragraphs of written language by the end of grade 2.  It mentions how the muscle movement patterns of letter-writing contribute to fluency for written language. It discusses written language as a neural network of skills which must work together to generate high-quality written language. StepUp to Learn programs provide daily fluency practice for handwriting (speed + accuracy = fluency).  Fluency turns skills into tools for new learning!
